Forbes top business and career coaches provide insights and best practices on becoming an effective leader.

Lead Your People And Manage Your Processes ~ Never be reluctant to be a leader who models the behaviors you want to see in others. Don’t worry about managing people. If they like where you are headed, they will follow. Your job is to share the vision, set the tone and move to action. This gives people a purpose and reason to follow. Be a generous, fair and supportive leader with your people, but a tough manager of problems and faulty processes.

~ Hayward Suggs, Commonquest Consulting

What can we can learn from Colantuono’s TedTalk?

Why are so many women stuck in “middle management?”Susan Colantuono (2014)

Colantuono states that in order to move up within an Organization, you need to be known for your leadership skills. Per Colantuono’s definition, Leadership is defined by “using the greatness in you to achieve and sustain extraordinary outcomes by engaging the greatness in others.”

Colantuono points out, there are women who are smart, hardworking, committed, trustworthy, with great communication skills. Yet, they are stuck in middle management.

So when it comes to advancement within an organization, why are these women being overlooked?

According to Colantuono, it is a result of specific skills and abilities that company’s actually DO NOT ask for. Why? Because they are deemed as “a given.”

So what exactly are women missing in order to break through from middle management to a senior or executive position? Let Colantuono explain by clicking on the picture below to access her TedTalk (2014).

Raising Strong Girls

October 17, 2017 by Dr. Gia Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago, I was talking with my cousin who is raising a smart, beautiful, and confident young woman. This amazing person also happens to be my Goddaughter.

My cousin had just heard a parenting expert explain that our children will not treat themselves the way that we treat them. They will treat themselves the way they see us treat ourselves. This was especially relevant to young girls.

This reminded me of the old adage;

“Children do what we do, not what we say.”

My cousin summarized it more succinctly;

“We must be who we want our girls to become.”

If we want our girls to be healthy, they must see us making healthy food choices.

If we want our girls to be physical, they must see us run, hike, and bike.

If we want our girls to be confident, they must see us poised, assured, and self-possessed.

If we want our girls to be engaged in the arts, they must see us writing, playing music, and dancing.

If we want our girls to have a joy-filled life, then we must fill our lives with joy!

Parenting can be one of the most challenging and rewarding roles we are blessed to serve in. In more recent years, my husband and I have had the pleasure of celebrating two beautiful little people in our lives we affectionately refer to as our “Munchkins”. We are clear about the special role we play in their lives as grandparents. We have a unique opportunity to help influence them as they grow and develop into exceptional young women.

As my cousin and I discussed the implications of this research I was reminded, for us to raise strong girls, we must too be strong women.
