“Happyish”

October 2, 2018 by Dr. Gia Leave a Comment

(Note: if you are offended by strong language, please consider forgoing this week’s post)

In 2015, Showtime produced a TV series called “Happyish”.  It was supposed to star the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman. His untimely death led to a revised cast which included, Steve Coogan, Kathryn Hahn, Bradley Whitford, Ellen Barkin, and Hannah Hodson.

“Happyish” was a dark comedy that leveraged satire to tell the story of a middle-aged couple coping with the terrains of life.

Steve’s character had a new boss, whom was much younger. He struggled with the falsehoods of his work at an advertising agency. Not to mention, there is significant evidence that he likely suffered from depression. Kathryn’s character, Steve’s wife, had “issues with her mom” and “mommy issues” as she attempted to balance her career as an artist and her 4-year-old son.

I absolutely loved it!!!

I imagined Hoffman in the lead role and the depth he might’ve brought (opposed to Steve’s cynical humor) to his interpretation of the lead character.

During one of my favorite scenes, in utter resistance to her mother’s relentless guilt trips, Kathryn demanded to an empty room, “Don’t F*@& with my bubble!”

She meant her “happy bubble”. I physically stood up to show my alignment with her declaration. (Yes, I really stood up. Yes, I was being dramatic … LOL)

When you have spent a duration of your life not okay, if you ever get the ground underneath your feet to stop trembling, you aggressively safeguard that world. You become fiercely protective of your happiness.

You choose your battles. Not because you lack the courage to fight; but because you understand that all battles are not worth fighting.

Your demur response to an outrage does not mean you lack compassion; you’ve just learned you can best respond if you do not panic.

Removing yourself from contentious situations that do not benefit you or the other party; well, that’s just wisdom.

You learn to recognize when you’ve won.

You take none of it for granted because you understand, none of it is promised.

My happiness is my responsibility.

Not my parents. Not my children. Not even my amazing husband.

Mine.

I take this responsibility very seriously.

“Don’t F*@& with my bubble!”

I totally wanted to include a video clip of the trailer but, I couldn’t, it’s just too darn offensive.

That said, if you are reading this right now and you are curious, you know … you are holding an electronic device …  :  )

(Note: the softer version of me will return next week)
